Mammals of the Charente/Dordogne

Dormice

Unlike the UK there are three species of 'dormice' in France. The UK dormouse or hazel dormouse is I believe quite rare in the Charente/Dordogne.
The edible dormouse or loir is more common and is distinguished by its thick furred tail. It is said that it was reared for food by the Romans. It has been introduced into the Chilterns.
The garden dormouse or lerot has a black face mask and a thinner tail. It is not native to the UK.
  1. Edible dormice or loir amongst trees. Note their speed of movement and climbing ability.
  2. Loir again, they are rarely seen in the day, unlike squirrels.
  3. Better view of loir. The mammal on the ground is a brown rat.
  4. Loir, thick tail.
  5. Lerot, thinner tail and black face mask.
  6. Hazel dormouse.
